walking'<br>Sustainability means ensuring human rights and well-being without depleting or
diminishing the capacity of the earth's ecosystems to support life, or at the expense of others
well-being. It is a multi-dimensional concept encompassing environmental integrity, social
well-being, economic resilience and good governance: each of these sustainability dimensions
involves several issues and all dimensions need to be considered. Sustainability is an ambitious
objective that can be reached through different pathways. <br><br>In 1989, FAO defined sustainable
agriculture and rural development as an objective that seeks: an appropriate balance between food
self-sufficiency and food self-reliance; employment and income generation in rural areas,
particularly to eradicate poverty; and natural resource conservation and environmental protection.
<br><br>The new website disseminates information on new projects of the Natural Resources and
Environmental Management Department that address action across all sustainability dimensions, with
the interactive inputs of partners and the general public through our e-forum, public database and
direct e-mailings. <br><br><br>The site hosts several ongoing projects facing the problem of
sustainability under different perspectives:<br><br><ul><li>Greening the Economy with Agriculture
