EU: a new publication on organic aquaculture

The European Commission's Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries has recently published a series of data on the EU market of organic aquaculture. The latest sales figures were collected by the European Market Observatory for Fisheries and Aquaculture Products - EUMOFA. Organic aquaculture products account for almost 4% of total aquaculture production in the EU, and reached about 50,000 tons in 2015.

The new Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2016/673

Now available in the Official Gazette  L 116/8 of 30 April 2016 the Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2016/673 of 29 April 2016 amending Regulation (EC) No. 889/2008 laying down detailed rules for implementing Regulation (EC) No. 834/2007 on organic production and labeling of organic products with regard to organic production, labeling and controls.

Organic aquaculture and controls: new guidelines from the EC

As anticipated through the Mipaaf note no.86384 of 17 December 2015 (the LINK) on the COP (former SCOF) meeting  that took place in December, the European Commission published guidelines on additional controls that should be implemented on products imported from certain third countries, and the opportunity for aquaculture operators  to use non-organic juveniles until 31 December 2016.
