Exactly one year after the first international congress, IN.N.E.R.- the International Network of Eco Regions, announces the birth of the world alliance for bio-districts. The World Congress had taken place from 18 to 20 July in Portugal (LINK) in synergy with other important international events within the framework of FISAS - International Forum on the territories relevant for sustainable food systems. From the Congress emerged the need to make a critical mass among all the world “territorial” organic experiences, in order to contribute significantly to the solution of global problems related to climate change, health emergencies, indiscriminate exploitation of natural resources, bad food and social injustices. Therefore IN.N.E.R., together with other internationally renowned organizations, started the path leading to the birth of the ‘Global Alliance for Organic Districts’ (GAOD - Global Districts for Organic Districts www.gaod.online) in 2020.

During the COVID-19 pandemic and the consequent lockdown, from 26 March to 26 June 2020, 6 online conferences were held: they  led to the discussion of strategic issues for bio-districts (such as organic agriculture, soil fertility, carbon reduction, the ecological economy, organic purchases by the public administration, sustainable diets, sustainable local food systems). It was decided to expand the Alliance, which is now composed of the following organizations: IN.N.E.R., ALGOA, Regeneration International, the League of municipalities and biological provinces of the Philippines; with the support of IFOAM Organics International, IFOAM EU, IFOAM Asia, Baltica Foundation and the Organic Food Systems Program.

The activities of the Alliance are now developed into 6 working groups: 1) integrated management of bio-districts, 2) tourism and gastronomy, 3) agriculture and management of natural resources, animal welfare, 4) food and energy, 5) food and consumption, 6) social purposes, strengthening of social agriculture and countryside-city relations.

The next appointment will be the World Summit, coordinated by ALGOA, which will take place online from 12 to 16 October 2020, pending a "normal" meeting in September 2021 in Rennes, on the occasion of the World Organic Congress.
