Organic aquaculture: the new Italian rules are ready

With specific Decrees (nr. 11954, 11955) the new European rules on organic aquaculture (Reg. CE 710/09) have now been implemented, entering into force from July 1^st, 2010. The Decrees, signed by the Ministry of Agriculture, have been forwarded to the Control Bodies for the registration, they will then be publish on the Italian Official Gazette.

ORGANIC FARMING IN ITALY: NOW AVAILABLE THE 2009 DATA

SINAB has presented and published the data related to the analysis of the organic farming sector in Italy. By 31 January 2009, the organic farming operators were 48,509, a 2% decrease on 2008. On the contrary, the total surface for the sector has increased by 10 %, reaching 1,106,684 ha organically grown. These and more data are available in the annexed document, in Italian.

Commenting SINAB data, the Italian Minister of Agriculture Giancarlo Galan said that �the appreciation of the Italian productions, by Italians and foreigners, is steadily increasing, and we have to do more to improve the sector and support the Italian organic producers. In agreement with the Regional Authorities, the implementation of Rural Development Plans to convert new farms into organic has to be strongly promoted. MiPAAF, the Italian Ministry of Agriculture, -stated Galan- is working to encourage the organic sector through the National Action Plan, trying at the same time to reduce the bureaucratic burden on organic farms, with the objective to facilitate as far as possible the access of the Italian producers to the important and growing organic market, thus answering the consumers� requests�.

The Mipaaf Decree of 18 December 2009 concerning the updating of the list of fertilizers allowed in organic farming has been published in the Italian Official Gazette.

A new TV campaign to support organic farming

To improve consumption of organic products, and in view of the national event ('Le piazze del Bio - Organic squares') foreseen on April 18th, Italian Ministry of Agriculture (Mipaaf) has financed a specific TV campaign (frequences on http://www.canaleitalia.it/narea.asp?ID=3) lasting until April 24th. Through short - but reach in contents - spots, organic farming experts will introduce the viewers to all secrets of the organic world, visting farms, shops, processing plants, explaining differences with the conventional farming, certification and control finalities, legislation, labelling, and answering all the most common consumers questions on the issue.
