The Rome municipality approved a resolution with new operational guidelines for the awarding of school meals, valid until July 2020. Among the new features, the use of organic products, the donation of non-consumed foodstuffs to charities, the inclusion of a "social clause" . An innovative measure to substantially improve the service quality, managing it with a centralized procurement. Among the innovations, the use of only organic, PDO, PGI products, fair trade products and those proceeding from local short chains; specific environmental indications, in particular for containment and differentiation of waste and food waste; as regards the short chain, the production cycle, processing and packaging of foodstuffs will have to be held within 300 km from the center of Rome; for at least 50% of the transport only hybrid or electric cars or railways will have to be used; the donation of intact and not used food for charities and the destination for animal consumption or for composting of cooked and not consumed foodstuffs; the inclusion of the so-called social clause to protect workers employed in the current school lunch system.
